Review Summary:

The 2018 DB11 is the consummate grand tourer. It rides like nothing else in its class and there is plenty of excitement to be had.

Superb ride, great looks and an immensely engaging drive.

Not as blindingly rapid as its rivals for the price.

2018 Aston Martin DB11

We think it’s a fabulous looking thing, inside and out. The sides are sucked in and the bonnet long and priapic; it’s one of the most masculine Astons yet. Forget the ‘Beauty’ bit of Aston’s cheesy ‘Power. Beauty. Soul’ spiel, the 2018 Aston Martin DB11 is a strapping thing. Handsome is the word we would use. It’s one of those cars that photos don’t do justice to; it looks epic in the metal.

The cabin is much nicer than the DB9’s, too. The fit and finish is more precise and the materials used are properly premium. The tech is better, thanks to Aston’s Mercedes association, so essentially you get a bang up-to-date infotainment system, unlike Aston’s recent days where one of the main tech features was, get this, a calculator.

It finally feels like a million-dirham car in here.

The drive

Necessity is the mother of invention and given that British roads are notoriously pot-holed and pockmarked, it comes as no surprise that the 2018 Aston Martin DB11 rides well. All British sportscars and supercars ride well. What is surprising though, is how incredibly comfortable the DB11 is for a car of this type. It’s even comfier than a McLaren which has a fancy suspension with no roll bars; this is, bar none, the best riding you can buy today.

Naturally, you would assume it’s a flobbery old thing in the corner, then. You’d be wrong. The DB11 has a superb balance of ride and handling. Since the suspension is softly sprung, every bump when driving fast is a little more exaggerated, but never to an alarming level. It really does feel alive when you’re gunning it. You can feel everything the car is up to but at no point does it feel threatening.

The 5.2-litre turbocharged V12 mated with an eight-speed automatic gearbox makes 600 horsepower and 700Nm of torque with an official 0-100km/h time of 3.7 seconds and a top speed of 322km/h. On the move, thanks to the loquacious chassis, it feels faster. Way faster. Oh, and it sounds absolutely thrilling for a turbocharged engine.

2018 Aston Martin DB11

It’s not as darty as a Ferrari, but trust us, this is an equally rewarding driving experience, albeit in its own unique way. Also, it’s important to add, there is virtually zero turbo lag; it’s stomp-and-go acceleration. It is the finest car, mechanically, Aston has built to date. High praise, but we’re sticking with it.

The tech

In terms of tech, think Mercedes-Benz and you would gather what it’s like inside the DB11. This is no faint praise. All the gadgets you get in a high-end Mercedes are clear and present. For instance, you get the same hi-res 360-degree camera you get in a 2018 S-Class. It’s a far cry from Astons of old. Like we said earlier, this is an Aston that rivals the best of Italy right now.

The trims

There is a V8 option available, which we haven’t tested yet. However, we are inclined to believe it’s kind of like an AMG GT with nicer ride. That’s no bad thing.

2018 Aston Martin DB11

The 2018 Aston Martin DB11 is the consummate grand tourer. It rides like nothing else in its class and there is plenty of excitement to be had. If we were looking to buy a GT right now, this would score very, very high in our book.
