After a concept model we first saw two years ago at the Geneva motor show, and then a steady stream of teases and spy shots, is finally ready to show off the new T-Roc crossover before its proper public premiere at next month’s Frankfurt motor show.

The name T-Roc was chosen to convey the crossover’s SUV-ness, suggesting it can tackle hardcore stuff like rock-crawling and such, and then a big T was slapped up front so the model ties in nicely with VW’s current and future naming schemes — you know, Tiguan, Touareg, Terramont (Atlas in the US), and Touran (MPV thing in Europe…).

Slotting in beneath the Tiguan, the T-Roc is related to Audi’s posher new Q2, and sits on Wolfsburg’s familiar MQB platform that also underpins the Golf, and indeed the Tiguan, and the Terramont… It gets around, that MQB.

In the T-Roc the architecture is available with all-wheel drive (front-drive will come as standard) and a range of power plants including a choice of three four-cylinder turbocharged petrol engines.

Competing against rivals like the Mazda CX-3 and even for Mini Countryman buyers (in Europe the T-Roc will start from around AED85,000), the car will come powered by anywhere between 113 and 197 horsepower if you go for the headlining 2.0-litre motor. A twin-clutch automatic gearbox will drive all four wheels in that case.

Inside the cabin is lifted from the newest Mk7.2 Golf but with some T-Roc-exclusive touches like a colour-coded dash. With the 60/40 rear seats folded flat the car will swallow a load of 1,290 litres, otherwise you get seating for five and a cargo capacity of 445 litres.

The cutthroat crossover market however, is all about equipment levels to many, so VW throws in standard features including automatic emergency braking, active lane keeping, and pedestrian monitoring. Optionally buyers will be able to spec blind spot monitoring, adaptive cruise control, a rear-view camera, and a parking assist system that parallel parks for you.
