2008 Toyota RAV4 | new car review

A soft-roader with oodles of appeal – that’s the
RAV4 for you! Updated last year when the RAV4 went under the scalpel
and came out bigger than before. Available earlier in four- and
two-door form, the smaller version has been given the chop this year.

If you are familiar with the previous generation
RAV4, you would appreciate the new looks very much as this
soft-roader appears a lot leaner and meaner in its new avatar, so
much so that Toyota has penned the same design theme across on its
bigger sibling, the all-new Landcruiser. It’s become some sort of a
very acceptable family compared to the youngish crowd it
was more attracted to in its previous outing.

Inside, the dash is neatly laid out with the entire
driver’s paraphernalia at his/her command. To give the RAV4
interior an up-market feel, the centre console as well as the
steering wheel gets plastic trimmings in faux pas brushed aluminium.
The centre console also hosts the audio system, aircon controls and
the rest of the usual controls. Back seat passengers sit comfortably
with more shoulder room, head clearance as well as legroom than

Power comes from a 2.4-litre four-cylinder engine –
the only available unit, ostensibly to keep the price competitive. It
has a maximum power output of 168bhp at 6000rpm, while the maximum
torque available is 223Nm at 4000rpm. This engine is mated to a
four-speed automatic gearbox, although there is also a 5-speed manual
transmission available.

The RAV4 has compelled other manufacturers to come
out with their interpretations of a recreational SUV. That it still
continues to hold its own and with Toyota reiterating its confidence
in this model means that the competition will have to work doubly
harder to play catch up. And yes, it can go off-road too…confidently!

The 2008 Toyota RAV4 is outstanding and deserves an applause for keeping intact its self-carved niche in the the front league of Compact Affordable SUV..Fuel economy wise it is great, but not the best..And yet its award winning streak as the best family car makes it a frontrunner in the compact crossovers market.
