Middle East confusion prompts Passat CC renaming

Volkswagen’s Middle East dealers have changed the name of the Passat CC because it’s confusing customers.

Although the official name of the sedan is still the Passat CC, dealers are ordering cars from the factory with only CC badges, and are no longer using the word Passat in the showrooms.

A spokesman for Volkswagen Middle East said customers were confused by the name, assuming that the CC was a replacement for the original Passat, which remains on sale. Upon discovering that they could order the cars without the Passat badge, dealers decided to cut the name down.

Henceforth then, the car is to be known as the Volkswagen CC.

When Toyota can get away with it with examples like Toyota corollaTERCEL in the past and Toyota landcruiserPRADO (still) then why the confusion over the Passats. The cars dont even look the same. Anyone not being able to differentiate between the two doesnt even deserve to have one. Does Volkswagen Middle East think it is less confusing now? Renaming it to Volkswagen CC as in Confusing Customers??

I think the confusion among Volkswagen customers is that the Passat and Passat CC are quite similar - both are a similar size, both have four doors etc, and the uninformed assume that the CC is simply the latest version of the regular Passat.
The Land Cruiser and Land Cruiser Prado on the other hand are different sizes, and have a much longer heritage to them as well - both have been around for years. In fact, many people I know just refer to the latter as the Prado and don't realise it shares the Land Cruiser name.

Thats exactly my point Phil. With time 'the informed' would automatically have called it CC without having to change the name because its a different car. Regarding the 'uninformed' Volkswagen need not bother anyway.

To C or not to C

CC or no CC, at least this says consumers are talking about these cars - good for VW and the dealers.
