2008 Toyota Prado
Suitably enhanced for the 2008 model year, the Prado is a scaled down version of the Land Cruiser. It is at its best in five-door specification; the shorter three-door version is a little lacking in ability on tracks and also pitches and rolls a little too much for comfort on black tops. The 2008 Prado carries its legendary persona a step forward as it thrives to keep the character of this superb SUV intact. The front design maintains the tough look that the Prado is renowned for while the grille and front bumpers add to its solid presence. The interior design is contemporary and offers a sensible mix of luxury and convenience. The famed Toyota standards of quality are very much in evidence in this machine. The cabin is spacious and roomy with expansive head, shoulder and leg room along with good cargo space. The tried and tested 4.0-litre engine delivers excellent low-to-mid rpm torque, which is indispensable in a true off-roader. But the smaller 2.7-litre engine, whilst being frugal, is a bit of a let-down. It has to be coaxed and that does test one’s patience! Both engines can be specified with either a manual or automatic gearbox. The transmissions available include a five-speed manual and four-speed auto for the 2.7, while the 4.0-litre gets the automatic with five speeds. At the same time, the robust four cylinder 3.0-litre diesel engine has been revised to improve performance and economy.
