You’re looking at BMW’s newest four-door that’s based on a two-door that’s based on a four-door.

Allow us to explain… Just unveiled at the Geneva motor show, the new BMW Concept M8 Gran Coupe is not only a mouthful, but also a very pretty four-door coupe even though of course there is no such thing.

If it makes production, which it will in about a couple of years, it’ll come on 7 Series running gear and also share its underpinnings with the 8 Series. You know the one, that was unveiled last year. The two-door one…

Anyway the M8 Gran Coupe will rule the BMW range as Munich’s halo car, and as such you can expect it to be plenty powerful and plenty luxurious.

Not that BMW is revealing anything about the car’s performance. But it’s still pretty logical to assume that the 8 Series range will kick off with a 3.0-litre straight six, going on to a 4.4-litre twin-turbocharged V8, and perhaps even topping out with a 6.6-litre V12 like the 7 Series line-up.

The M8 specifically will likely stick to a V8, although we’re not discounting the very real prospect of electrified models as well.

Mostly, this Geneva concept is meant to preview the look of the M8 Gran Coupe, which will go into production with minimal changes as is the custom with BMW’s green-lit concept cars.

Domagoj Dukec, BMW M and BMW i design boss, said: “We want to reach people who are looking for something special and who want to stand out from the crowd…”

Perhaps you’re right in thinking that it might prove difficult to stand out from the crowd when you’re busy making three million cars a year, but the M8 Gran Coupe just might do it for BMW.
