There aren’t many options for families looking for a five-seater in the AED50,000 range, but Chinese brand has now launched just such a thing with the new RX5 SUV

Currently in the UAE, British-Chinese manufacturer MG offers a line-up of three models including two saloons and one crossover, but now the company has launched its all-new impact SUV in the region to stretch the local portfolio and take the fight to its cheap-and-cheerful rivals.

Starting from AED52,000, the MG RX5 competes in a tough segment with cars such as the Renault Duster, Ford Ecosport, Hyundai Creta, and others. At least it does compete on value, because the MG is actually bigger than most other competitors in this price sector, since it measures quite significantly longer than even something like a Hyundai Tucson, and runs it about even with the Honda CR-V for example. It’s also as wide and tall as a CR-V, however the MG (also badged as a Roewe in China) boasts a longer wheelbase which should aid cabin space.

At that price, you’d think MG is hiding something, but the Chinese aren’t skimping underneath either – the base RX5 models make do with a 1.5-litre turbocharged four-cylinder engine mated to a seven-speed automatic transmission, delivering 169 horsepower and 250Nm of torque. The top-spec 2.0-litre car also uses turbocharging for a rated figure of 221 horsepower and 350Nm of torque, which is good for zero to 100km/h in just over eight seconds.

As for equipment levels, the Chinese seem to be taking a page out of the Korean guide for winning over customers, and even the base-spec MG RX5 comes loaded with automatic air conditioning, electric windows, cruise control, hill descent, tyre pressure monitoring system, ABS and electronic brake-force distribution, plus an 8.0-inch colour touchscreen.

If you splash out a little more for the 2.0, you get electric folding wing mirrors, LEDs, electrically-adjustable driver’s seat, a bunch of extra airbags, as well as a panoramic roof and all-wheel drive. As far as safety is concerned, MG would like to remind you that the RX5 earned a five-star rating in the C-NCAP crash tests (don’t confuse them for the European standards).

Other niceties include fog lamps, 18-inch wheels, and as the manufacturer puts it, “the use of high grade material, chrome edging and soft-touch material covering 80 percent of the surfaces.”

The 2018 MG RX5 SUV is available now in showrooms across the region, and we’ll update you on the car’s verdict once Auto Middle East gets a hold of one for some thorough testing.
