Apparently, the Nürburgring is a bit last week if you are Bentley. While most manufacturers are still indulging in some good old sabre rattling at the famed German circuit, the Crewe carmaker has decided to showcase the chops of the 2018 Bentley Bentayga at the Pikes Peak International Hill Climb come June 24, 2018.

Armed with 600 horsepower, the mega Bentley aims to be the fastest SUV to conquer the treacherous 12.42 mile (about 20kms) Colorado Spring hill climb. Dubbed the Race to the Clouds, Pikes Peak is one of the most perilous hill climbs in the world, what with its 156 corner and an ascent of 1,440 metres.

Although the hill climb is now fully paved and is asphalt from start to finish, taming it in a two-tonne-plus SUV isn’t going to be a stroll in the park. Even with the Bentayga’s prodigious 900Nm of torque, intelligent all-wheel drive system and trick air suspension with Bentley’s world-first 48-volt active anti-roll system.

Bentley’s motorsports department is preparing the car for the record attempt at the company’s headquarters in Crewe, England.

“Since its launch, the Bentayga has set the luxury SUV benchmark with its unique combination of bespoke British craftsmanship, performance and grand touring ability. We hope to set another benchmark at the 2018 Pikes Peak International Hill Climb by conquering the most demanding mountain road course in the world,” says project leader and Bentley’s Director of Motorsport, Brian Gush.

Over the years Japanese manufacturers such as Suzuki and Toyota have dominated the Pikes Peak Hill Climb, and if the Bentayga does set a new record it would indeed be a big deal for the British manufacturer.
