It was only a matter of time – the Blue Oval is selling more crossovers than ever and in its home market in the US Ford has just posted the best ever year in sales in 2017. Now the company is stretching its crossover offering with a new performance model to cover all the bases.

Scheduled to make its public premiere at the later this week, the new ST promises, according to the maker, the most powerful V6 engine in the segment, as well as benchmark handling and braking.

The 2.7-litre twin-turbo makes 335 horsepower and 515Nm of torque, although Ford hasn’t released any actual performance figures so we’ll just have to take their word for it at the moment.

Naturally with all that grunt there is all-wheel drive included as standard, and an eight-speed automatic transmission doing the deed. ST-specific suspension also makes the cut with firmer dampers, and some pretty huge 21-inch wheels unique to the model.

Other than that Ford focussed on increasing the equipment list for the 2019 Edge model, so the crossover gets a bunch of driver assist technologies, a whole lot of airbags, and an updated 12-speaker Harman sound system.

The Edge ST additionally stands out with new front and rear styling including a mesh grille, more aggressive side skirts and spoilers, dual exhausts, and some faux scuff plates to remind you it’s an SUV.

On the move, the Edge ST also features a new Sport mode that sharpens up throttle response and gear shifting (it’ll hold a gear at the redline through corners) and adds some aural drama through the exhausts.

Ford says the new Edge ST is due to go on sale first in the US market later this summer before heading out to other regions.
