Infiniti is climbing up the luxury car tier with this vision of an upcoming flagship, with the Q Inspiration concept ready for the Detroit motor show later this month

Nissan’s luxury arm Infiniti really wants to be taken seriously at the whole premium thing. The brand is flying high at the moment with sales in 2017 increasing by double digits thanks to new hardware such as the compact QX30 volume-seller.

For its next trick, Infiniti wants to take on the luxury stalwarts, such as the Mercedes-Benz S-Class, BMW 7 Series and 6 Series Gran Coupe, and going on all the way through to the new Audi A7 (which Auto Middle East is trying out next month in South Africa) and the third-generation Audi A8.

Infiniti already gave us a glimpse of its idea of a flagship three years ago at the Paris motor show with the Q80 Inspiration concept car, standing proud at over five meters long and yet just 1,350mm tall, which looked all the more exaggerated on the chromed and beautifully crafted 22-inch wheels. Things looked good in Paris, but next week at the Detroit motor show we’re getting another even better-looking glimpse at an upcoming flagship that more closely previews the approaching production car.

This 2014 concept from the Paris motor show introduced Infiniti’s idea of a flagship model…

Iorder to stand out amongst such established rivals Infiniti pulled out all the design stops with a pretty snazzy concept they call the Q Inspiration, the styling having been overseen near the end of the project by new design boss Karim Habib who recently moved to Infiniti over from BMW…

“We aim to take traditional saloon architecture to its next stage of evolution,” Habib said. “Experimenting with new proportions in an established segment with the arrival of smarter, compact powertrains, the Q Inspiration features a shorter hood and elongated body, with all the benefits to interior wellbeing, comfort and space that this layout entails.”

Going by that you can expect efficient powertrains in the Q80 production model once it finally goes on sale, including the option of Infiniti’s new variable-compression turbocharged four-cylinder engine.

Infiniti still hasn’t made it entirely clear when the Q Inspiration concept will yield a production car, but we’ll know more once the Detroit motor show kicks off on January 14.
