It took a doubling of the factory and facilities and years of investment over at Sant’Agata Bolognese, but the result will have been worth it as the new rolls out to become the supercar manufacturer’s best-selling model.

In fact, Lamborghini expects to no less than double annual sales all thanks to the introduction of the Urus, only the company’s second SUV in history since the 1986 LM002.

As anticipated throughout the car’s much hyped development, it comes based on the same Volkswagen Group platform that makes up the Bentley Bentayga, Porsche Cayenne and Audi Q7, but as you see from the images it looks decidedly more angular.

Lamborghini’s in-house design department managed to keep it sporty looking thanks to oversize wheels that favour the right proportions, 21-inch in diameter as standard fitment although you can optionally choose up to 23-inch monster wheels if you wish. Which also happen to be the biggest wheels and tyres ever fitted to a Lamborghini.

Weighing in at around 2.2-tonnes, Lamborghini fits the Urus with a turbocharged 4.0-litre V8 engine producing 641 horsepower and 850Nm of torque – that’s more horsepower than you get in a 12-cylinder Bentayga.

With all-wheel drive and Lamborghini’s chassis and electronics trickery the Urus sprints from zero to 100km/h in 3.6 seconds, and reaches a top speed of 305km/h.

What’s more, it’ll do all that with seating for five, and four doors, and 600 liters of boot space. It almost starts to make practical sense…

Lamborghini’s new extension to the Sant’Agata factory will produce one thousand Uruses in 2018 from early in the year, with a ramp up to 3,500 cars annually from 2019.
