has just unveiled the all-new Ascent three-row SUV at the Los Angeles motor show as the biggest car the Japanese brand’s ever made, ready to go on sale Stateside next summer for the 2019 model year.

Developed specifically with North American buyers in mind – which means it is unclear yet when and if the 2019 Ascent will be available in the Middle East market – on top of Subaru’s global platform that also underpins the new Impreza, the big SUV will be available offering a choice of seven- or eight-seater configurations.

Designed with interior space and cargo capacity in mind, according to the maker, the car will feature Subaru’s all-wheel drive system and a new 2.4-litre four-cylinder boxer engine claimed to provide six-cylinder performance without the fuel economy premium.

Subaru says particular attention was paid to second and third row seat adjustability, and ease of entry, through the addition of steps and grips, as well as wide door opening angles and large door apertures themselves.

To compete in a tough segment against rivals such as the Chevrolet Traverse and GMC Acadia, the measures just short of five meters in length, with a 2,890mm wheelbase (longer than the Acadia, for example) and minimum ground clearance of 220mm which is also amongst best-in-class.

Subaru is also promising segment-competitive safety features, loads of driver assist technologies like automatic braking and vehicle detection systems, as well as kit such as a cabin-view mirror so you can keep an eye on rear passengers, a panoramic sunroof, automatic air conditioning, and ventilated seats.
