Mercedes-Benz likes to brag at every opportunity to anyone in the vicinity about founding the coupe-saloon segment back in 2005 with the first-generation CLS, which sounds a bit like inventing a hollow sock, but actually proved incredibly lucrative.

Following on from the CLS, all of Merc’s rivals milked the coupe-saloon niche for all its worth with subsequent cars like the Sportback, BMW 6 Series and .

Now Mercedes is trying to wrangle back control in the segment with the new third-generation CLS that has just been revealed at the .

Further evolving the brand’s latest design language, the CLS is recognizable with its sloping roofline, obviously, and and a wider grille at the base for a forwards-slanting shark-like front end. The back is very S-Class Coupe-ish (even though the car is really a coupe E-Class), which is no bad thing, and both front and rear lights are LED units with a 3D effect according to the manufacturer.

At launch when the CLS is released it will be offered with a choice three engines except two of them are diesels, so the sole petrol models comes with all-wheel drive and the company’s latest inline six cylinder. With a 3.0-litre engine it’s badged as the CLS 450 4Matic developing 367 horsepower and 500Nm of torque.

Like the S-Class the CLS features Mercedes’ Air Body control suspension and chassis that adaptively adjusts to the road surface, plus a bunch of the latest driver assist technologies such as lane keeping, speed limit assist, and smart cruise control.

Inside it’s very much like the S-Class, which again is no bad thing, meaning you get dual 12.3-inch displays and a fully digital cockpit. Despite the sloping roof there’s 520 liters of cargo space and 40/20/40 split rear seats, plus 64 ambient mood lighting colour options in case you have a serious case of mood swings.

The CLS 450 does the 0-100km/h sprint in 4.5 seconds and goes on to a top speed limited to 250km/h, but you can expect 500bhp+ AMG models to surface in the coming weeks with acceleration in the threes…
