Japanese premium brand Infiniti unveils all-new QX50 with a variable-compression turbocharged engine

The all-new crossover is expected to roll out with a 2.0-litre four-cylinder turbo engine featuring variable compression tech

Right off the back of a global premiere at the Dubai motor show last week where Infiniti unveiled the new QX80 flagship, the Japanese premium brand has previewed another world debut ready for next week’s Los Angeles show.

The car in question is the new 2018 Infiniti QX50 that’ll be fighting for volume crossover sales in a tough segment including the Audi Q5, BMW X3, Mercedes-Benz GLC, Range Rover Evoque, Land Rover Discovery, and plenty more.

The QX50 comes to market as a crucial model for Infiniti, since it’s replacing the first-gen QX50 (previously known as the Infiniti EX) that’s been around since 2007, so this new mid-size will roll out based on an entirely new vehicle platform.

A major highlight of the car is the fact that Infiniti will offer the 2018 QX50 with the first production application of a variable compression engine with a turbocharger. Base models will come in a front-wheel drive application, and Infiniti will offer all-wheel drive options, although as most others in the segment the focus is on driving refinement and interior space.

Infiniti says the design (we only get a peek at one image released by the manufacturer so far) evolves the company’s styling language (‘Powerful Elegance’, by the way…) although not too much, so it fits in neatly under the flagship QX80 as a recognisable member of the family.

Without giving us a look inside, Infiniti promises high quality materials for the interior, and “advanced craftsmanship”, plus kit such as the brand’s ProPilot autonomous assist technologies, that will be able to take control of the car on single-lane carriageways.

Anyway stay peeled to Auto Middle East and we’ll have more coverage from the Los Angeles motor show in December.
