New 2018 BMW X2: Less practicality, more price, no shame

has launched  new nameplate, the new X2 , which shamelessly borrows an iconic BMW design cue and, well, doesn’t make a whole lot of sense

Now that BMW has broken through the stigma and bravely beaten off the taboos, and built a front-wheel drive car and we all only just kind of moaned, and then forgot about it, now Munich is free to do whatever it wants.

2018 bmw x2For example, take the new , an all new nameplate in the range and to the X1 what the X6 is to the X5. Which makes the X2 a less practical, more expensive X1 for, let’s say, not the sharpest tools in the drawer. Never mind that though, because besides the X2 being a front-wheel drive based crossover built on the Mini brand architecture, Munich’s designers embarrassingly took inspiration from the iconic and gorgeous BMW E9 from the Sixties and copied its signature blue-and-white roundel badges on the C-pillars, suggesting this lump of materialistic, faux SUV-ness can somehow trace its roots to the stunning 3.0 CSL…

Okay, we’ve calmed down… The first-ever X2 has just been announced which BMW claims is a new breed of car design, when plainly it’s just a crossover with contrasting plastic cladding, which of course means it’s a tough master of all terrain, or something.

Available from next year, the BMW X2 hasn’t had any pricing released yet, but it will launch in X2 xDrive28i trim which means it’s powered by a 2.0-litre turbocharged four-cylinder engine mated to an eight-speed automatic transmission. Power is quoted at 228bhp from 5,000rpm and 350Nm of torque from 1,450rpm, handy for zero to 100km/h in about 6.5 seconds.

You’ll be able to spec it with up to 20-in wheels, and in all sorts of adventurous colours like orange and of course it will be less practical than the X1 since it has 470 liters of boot space, compared to the X1 its based on with 505 litres. And in fact it’s way worse than the BMW 2 Series Gran Tourer which offers 560 liters of boot space.

We think there’ll also be a diesel X2 in Europe and elsewhere, and you can have it with an M Sport or M Sport X pack which gets frozen grey plastic cladding, ooh.
