Last month at the Frankfurt motor show all the Bentleys, Jaguars, Porsches and exotics were usurped by about five and a half feet of Honda. The Japanese giant won everyone’s hearts at the biggest show in Europe with a spiritual revival of the first-generation Civic in battery- form, and then made it even better by announcing the little Urban EV as green-lit for production.

Now this week at the Tokyo motor show Honda is continuing to push a path of electrification towards its next-decade targets. Speaking on the stand Honda boss Takahiro Hachigo said that Honda will electrify two thirds of its global automobile sales by 2030, and “are currently preparing products to meet this goal.”

Hachigo said Honda is planning to begin sales of the Urban EV concept first in the US and then in Japan in , and then showed the world his latest trick.

The sleek new Sports EV concept car has the makings of a Japanese classic, with its clean timeless design and ultra low frontal area. Based on the same dedicated EV platform as the one used for the Urban EV concept, Honda lowered the centre of gravity to realise a sporty driving experience, according to Hachigo.

Built to prove that electric sports cars can be drivers’ cars, the Sports EV concept features ringed LED headlights and taillights, a display grill just like its Urban EV cousin, and a pretty sizable bonnet air duct.

Even though its touted as an enthusiasts’ car Honda says the Sports EV packs artificial intelligence and driverless assistance systems, although there is no word yet on how any of it will translate to the production model that will hopefully follow after the Urban EV in 2020.
