Even though Subaru is not even part of the World Rally Championship any more, at the Tokyo motor show this week the Japanese manufacturer called on all its WRC legacy and the WRX name to fuse it into the Viziv Performance concept you see in these images.

And although just a very aggressive, purposeful styling study for now, the Viziv Performance is supposed to preview the next-generation 2020 WRX, featuring the hallmark boxer engine, symmetrical all-wheel drive, and for the first time in the nameplate’s history, driver assistance technologies. Hopefully that means you get to press a ‘Colin McRae’ button and take a sideways shortcut over a mountain.

The concept presented in Tokyo showed off Subaru’s ‘Dynamic and Solid’ design language, with rigid lines, massively flared wheel arches, carbon fibre components such as the fender tips, bumpers, and roof, and some angry ‘Hawkeye’ headlights.

Compared to the current generation, somewhat lumpy WRX sedan, the Viziv Performance measures in slightly longer, but significantly wider yet lower, so proportionally it has a much nicer stance on the ground. The wheelbase too is about 80mm longer than the current production WRX, and the concept sits on 20-inch wheels wrapped in 245/40 tyres.
