Right on cue, after we tested the new V8-engined DB11 with a 4.0-litre twin-turbo lump courtesy of the nice men and women from Mercedes-AMG, Aston Martin has further extended its latest range with a drop-top version of Gaydon’s GT.

The new Volante is available to order now from about AED860,000 and will start reaching owners early next year, powered by the same engine you can also find in the Mercedes-AMG GT S supercar  and the S63 convertible where the V8 makes north of 600 horsepower.

In the DB11 Volante, just like in the tin top, you’re looking at 500 brake and 675Nm of torque which will do for now before the V12 version inevitably arrives. Sharing the all-new aluminum structure with the Coupe, the Volante also works an identical eight-speed automatic transmission, electric power steering, limited-slip differential, and torque vectoring so it shouldn’t be a slouch.

The biggest difference is the soft-top, which you can have in red, black-silver, or grey, combined with extra personalisation options available such as new carbon fibre or wood veneer on the seat backs to show off the interior more.

Aston Martin paid particular attention to the roof, made of eight layers to better insulate noise, and according to the company, folding down to a class-leading stack height so it’s compact too. The roof takes 14 seconds to lower and 16 seconds to close at speeds of up to 50km/h, and nets a 20 percent gain in boot volume once its stowed compared to the predecessor model the DB9 Volante.

“The challenge of creating a convertible car,” says Aston’s technical boss Max Szwaj, “is retaining structural and dynamic integrity. To protect the former you need strength and rigidity, but to preserve the latter you need to keep weight to a minimum.”

Aston Martin managed it lowering the weight by 26kg and increasing stiffness by five percent, so we shouldn’t expect the DB11 Volante’s performance to differ much from the Coupe’s 0-100km/h in four seconds and top speed of 300km/h.
