The (Chinese-owned) Swedes have revealed their entry-level XC40 with a subscription-based ownership option called Care by

Volvo wants to reinvent car ownership with the new just-revealed XC40 crossover and introduce subscription services and flat rate monthly fees in an effort to “make having a car as transparent, easy and hassle free as having a phone”.

Considering we live in times when phones are getting ludicrously expensive and Chinese cars are getting cheaper, it sounds like a reasonable vision to us.

When it goes on sale after production commences in November, the XC40 will start from about AED140,000 and compete in the cutthroat premium compact crossover segment with stuff like the BMW X1, Audi Q3, Mercedes-Benz GLA, and even the upcoming Jaguar E-Pace (not the electric one, that’ll be the I-Pace — yes, we’re also confused).

With a design directly translated from the 40.1 concept car we first saw last year, the XC40 crossover will be available to buyers in three trim levels: Momentum, Inscription, and R-Design. As with the company’s flagship XC90 SUV, Volvo is also offering a First Edition launch version with all the toys you could want.

Built on Volvo’s modular architecture (the com[any’s one and only vehicle platform) the XC40 features highlights such as a 9.0-inch touchscreen, LEDs, 18-inch wheels, and a leading level of safety technologies. Engines include a couple of diesels and three petrol choices, going from 156 horsepower to 247bhp in front- or all-wheel drive with automatic transmissions. A 2.0-litre four-cylinder engine serves all XC40 petrol choices, be it the T3, T4 or headlining T5 model .

If you spec the sporty R-Design model, you get gloss black accents and dual exhaust pipes, plus available 20-inch diamond-cut wheels, leather and aluminum treatments for the interior, and an available 13-speaker sound system.
