The new I-Pace crossover will go on sale in 2018 as the first electric Jaguar ever, capable of 0-100km/h in about four seconds with a driving range of 500km from the 90kWh lithium-ion battery.

Driven by a pair of electric motors, one for each axle to provide all-wheel drive, the I-Pace puts 400 horsepower down to the road as well as 700Nm of torque. When you run out of juice you can charge it to 80 percent capacity in an hour-and-a-half using a regular wall socket. Oh, and then you can race it in an FIA support series.

The British manufacturer has just announced the world’s first international championship for production-based electric cars with the I-Pace, launching as a support series to the FIA championship in season five which starts at the end of 2018. Racers will line up on grids in 10 of the world’s cities including Hong Kong, Paris, Rome, New York and Sao Paolo.

There are up to 20 spots available to well heeled, environmentally-conscious ‘petrolheads’, with Jaguar running this as a complete ‘Arrive and Drive’ package deal so that your money gets you not only entry into the series and an I-Pace eTrophy to race, but also all technical support and car preparation, global logistics and hospitality, and they’ll even pack your race suit. A typical race weekend includes free practice and qualifying sessions and the main attraction, a 30-minute race.

Jaguar hasn’t revealed any specifications of the I-Pace eTrophy racecar, but we can begin with assuming it won’t have the standard crossover’s five-seat arrangement… The full information on this Formula E support series and the eTrophy, including the race calendar, will be revealed later in 2018.
