Land Rover has made the announcement of an all-electrified range of products from 2022 including EVs and hybrids — a new concept previews that future going further ahead to 2040 and beyond

After a record 2016 — the first time JLR surpassed the 600,000 sales mark in a year — thanks largely to the introduction of SUVs to the line-up, Jaguar is ready to make the next step in its resurgence.

As the company readies to launch the I-Pace electric crossover, which is scheduled to go on sale next year, Jaguar is making a stronger commitment to high-efficiency motoring claiming that from 2020 all the company’s cars will be electrified.

And that’s all, including the stuff that falls under the Land Rover brand. Considering the company’s current technological highlight is a 5.0-litre supercharged V8 that traces its roots to 1997 when Jaguar was under Ford ownership, that’s a bold vision.

“We will introduce a portfolio of electrified products across our model range, embracing fully electric, plug-in hybrid and mild hybrid vehicles,” said JLR CEO Ralf Speth, and to prove the seriousness of the claim the company has revealed the Jaguar Future-Type concept envisioning a car of 2040 and beyond.

The fully-autonomous concept explores the connected world of tomorrow, highlighted by a control device that isn’t even a part of it.

Jaguar thinks future cars will order milk for us…

To connect to the car, Jaguar thought up an advanced steering wheel called Sayer (after the E-Type designer, Malcolm Sayer) that lives in your home most of the time unless you call up the car for duty. When it’s sitting in your living room, Sayer is supposed to be an artificially intelligent helper, or personal assistant, doing things like minding your appointments and making sure the fridge is stocked up.

This sounds very much like any mobile device of the future, so Jaguar is merely envisioning a time when it’s not a car manufacturer so much as a service provider, or personal computer maker.

Anyway, back to the Future-Type, which acts as a research project for Jaguar to learn how to appeal to future customers, exploring concepts like membership clubs, on-demand services, and even concierge services like booking a table in a restaurant or something.

This is nothing new, as all car brands are currently in a crisis of sorts, trying to identify their purpose in a future of shared cars. As a personal vehicle amorphous into an impersonal transport pod, it will be just another digital device in our lives and all car manufacturers are asking how they will fit into consumers’ lives.
