After 38 years of serving soldiers, shaikhs, shahs, stars and soccer moms, the venerable Mercedes-Benz Geländewagen doesn’t seem to be going away anywhere any time soon.

In recent years Mercedes has been milking this military platform for all its worth and more, launching the G63 AMG 6×6 six-wheel drive pick-up, then the Night Edition, then the Final Edition (it wasn’t), then the fabulous portal-axle G500 4×4², and earlier this year, the barely conceivable Mercedes-Maybach G650 Landaulet limited to 99 extremely wealthy ($750,000 each…) and unabashed customers.

Now Mercedes has prepared yet another G-Class iteration heading for its Frankfurt motor show premiere next week, before the car assumably comes to its adopted home market here in the Middle East for a regional debut at November’s .

In fact there are two of them: with a starting price of $195,000 (around AED715,000), the first is the Mercedes-AMG G63 Exclusive Edition with the 5.5-litre twin-turbo still plodding on in the Gelandewagen developing 571 horsepower (the engine’s recently been succeeded in the S-Class, for example, with the newer, more powerful 4.0-litre V8).

The second model is the Mercedes-AMG G65 Exclusive Edition, powered by a 6.0-litre twin-turbo V12 worth 630 horsepower, and yours from AED1.25 million.

Both Exclusive Edition Gs come with stainless steel sump guards, and optional AMG Monza grey paint available only on these cars. Dark-coloured aluminum forms the body accents, and the wheels are matte black or high-sheen silver painted 21-inch items. For the first time on a G-Class, the spare wheel cover is available matched to the vehicle colour.

Inside, the changes include two-tone leather, AMG sports seats, Nappa hide everywhere, and the options of either carbon fibre or piano black trim. Other options include contrasting red seatbelts, leather grab-handles and a two-tone AMG Performance steering wheel.
