Ever since Maserati relaunched the Ghibli nameplate on the back of a four-door sedan, the Italian company has been on the rise — last year, thanks in no small terms to the introduction of the marque’s first ever SUV in its 103-year history, the Levante, Maserati sold a record 42,000 cars.

Now the crucial entry-level Ghibli model has been around since 2013 making the time ripe for a mid-life facelift and update to keep the luxury sedan fresh in the face of competition such as the new G30 generation BMW 5 Series, and new fifth-generation Mercedes-Benz E-Class.

Interestingly the Italian company (under the Fiat Chrysler Automobiles umbrella) chose this week’s Chengdu motor show in China to showcase the facelifted Ghibli. Luxury sales in the world’s biggest auto market are soaring this year after a recent slowdown, with Maserati expecting a year-on-year increase of some 50 percent by the end of 2017. Last year Maserati sold a little over 12,000 cars in China, more than a quarter of annual production, and this year the number is expected to go up to 18,000.

The new 2018 Ghibli, then, showed up with a restyled fascia featuring a new front bumper, bits of chrome garnishing and new chrome grille bars to tie in with the rest of Maserati’s latest range.

Viewed from the side, in Ghibli GranLusso trim the car gets new badges and side skirts, and round the back there is a new rear bumper and body coloured details.

Besides the cosmetic touches Maserati also worked on the aerodynamics and improving, or lessening, drag. To finish off the facelift the headlights have been updated to adaptive full LEDs, with glare free Matrix high beams.

The car will be making its premiere in our region soon too, so you can likely look out for the 2018 at November’s Dubai motor show.
