130 horsepower and just over a tonne, that’s not a bad deal…

The was always a niche, underrated car in our region and these days Honda Middle East doesn’t even offer the model in the . Instead, the Japanese giant’s local lineup starts with the AED52,900 City as the Jazz was discontinued here some three years ago.

The Europeans however can’t get enough of the little thing, and at next month’s Frankfurt motor show Honda is revealing a new 2018 Jazz that’s been on the receiving end of a facelift and general refresh, which includes an all-new engine option.

The Jazz hasn’t been available from Honda Middle East in the UAE for three years now

Now with slightly sportier styling, the 2018 Jazz incorporates the company’s signature headlight and grille design which the Japanese call ‘Solid Wing Face’, featuring sharper edges around the front bumper, air vents, and a the rear, which also gets gloss black trim.

Top-spec models will be available with a 7.0-inch infotainment system, rear-view camera and some safety tech such as forward collision and lane departure warning systems, while equipment like cruise control and an active safety braking system are standard fare.

The big deal is a new engine option Honda will be offering in the 2018 Jazz, serving up 130 horsepower from the 1.5-litre four-cylinder which makes the new Jazz a bit of a hot hatch — remember, the excellent outgoing Suzuki Swift Sport is about the same size and weight and that does just fine with 135 horsepower.

Optionally the new engine will be mated to a continuously variable transmission, revised to deliver more refined acceleration without the typical CVT droning.

As part of the new 2018 Jazz Dynamic trim, the 130-horsepower model also comes with a sporty front splitter, and a faux triple-strake rear diffuser, both finished with red accent lines. Other features of the Jazz Dynamic include LED headlights, front fog lamps, side skirts, a rear spoiler, gloss black 16-inch alloys, and a leather steering wheel with contrasting orange stitching.

With this 2018 Jazz we hope Honda Middle East reconsiders its portfolio and reintroduces the nameplate to the GCC market.
