Small car specialist reveals a Toyota Yaris sedan-sized DN F-Sedan powered by a 1.2-litre four-cylinder engine

At the Jakarta motor show, Japanese small-car specialist Daihatsu strayed from company convention to present a world premiere of a Yaris four-door-sized sedan.

The correlation isn’t coincidental — Toyota-owned Daihatsu has already been selling the Camry in certain Asian markets badged as the Daihatsu Altis since 2012.

That is merely badge-engineering though, while this latest DN F-Sedan concept unveiled in Indonesia previews Daihatsu’s own styling take on a four-door, five-seater. The F-Sedan however is about Honda City or Yaris sedan-sized, measuring in at 4.2-metres long with a two-and-a-half meter wheelbase.

The design was an open book to start with since Daihatsu doesn’t even have a heritage of sedans to fall back on, and the F-Sedan looks a bit like an Acura/Hyundai/Buick, which is to say certainly more premium than a four-door Yaris.

Powered by a 1.2-litre four-cylinder naturally-aspirated engine mated to a continuously variable transmission, the car barely musters up 90 horsepower and a little over 100Nm of torque, which is suitable for the Asian markets the car will be sold in.

In Indonesia the Daihatsu brand enjoys about a fifth of market-share and numbers as one of the company’s core markets. Daihatsu parent firm Toyota commands over a third of the Indonesian market so the duo are well placed to make the DN F-Sedan a reality despite a name abbreviated from Did Not Finish.

Elsewhere the design could be sold as the Toyota Vios and in Malaysia as a Perodua, although it’s unknown at this point whether Daihatsu has any pans to market a future compact sedan in the Middle East closer to our shores. If a production car eventually does get here, wearing a Daihatsu or a Toyota badge, it would be vying for buyers budgeting around AED50,000 for a car.
