The time between March and September, the gap between two major motor shows in Geneva and later in the year in either Frankfurt or Paris, is always hard to pass. A bit of a stopgap is a little get-together in Jakarta, where the GIIAS 2017 expo is taking place now and providing a platform for Asian market car launches.

Japanese manufacturer Mitsubishi took the opportunity in Indonesia for a world debut of the Xpander MPV that takes on styling cues from SUVs, with a faux sump guard up front and a raised ride height coupled with chiseled lines. It’ll enter a hot commercial segment rivaling the Toyota Avanza. Mitsubishi calls its offering a crossover SUV that combines “ruggedness with roominess”.

Hence unlike Toyota with the Avanza, Mitsubishi is also targeting lifestyle buyers with the Xpander wearing the company’s pronounced X-shape grille — Mitsubishi calls it ‘Dynamic Shield’ — and offering the highest ground clearance in class at over 200mm, riding on 16-inch wheels, and powered by a hundred-horsepower four-cylinder 1.5-litre engine making about 140Nm of torque mated to a four-speed automatic transmission.

Moving up through the different trim levels in select markets Mitsubishi will be offering the Xpander will light driving assistance systems such as hill-start control. The top-spec Xpander model features additional kit like keyless entry and a stop-start button, as well as a touchscreen infotainment system coupled to six speakers.

With its aggressive styling the Xpander takes cues from Mitsubishi’s past concepts such as the AR design study shown in 2014, the XR-PHEV that premiered at the 2015 Geneva motor show, and last year’s XM concept.

In South-East Asian markets the 2018 Mitsubishi Xpander will start from the equivalent of just over AED50,000 topping out at less than AED80,000. It is uncertain whether the MPV slash SUV will come to the Middle East region, but we will keep you updated.
