In response to the growth in aftermarket parts sales and the love of custom cars in the region, the Emirates Authority for Standardisation and Metrology earlier this year brought into effect a new regulatory system to enforce the specifications of passenger car modifications.

The new system aims to introduce service and workshop centers for car modifications across the UAE where enthusiasts can register and comply with regulations and legally drive their customised cars.

Now a new inspection centre just opened on Yas Marina island has officially become the first to start providing the service of regulating modified cars and ensuring safe use on public roads.

Located at the new centre aims to provide a positive link between the authorities and the car community, carrying out all inspections on cars and motorcycles and issuing official certificates of roadworthiness.

Mohammad Bin Sulayem, president of the Automobile and Touring Club of the UAE, said, “ This centre gives an opportunity for those who are inadvertently breaking the law to become legal. It gives a chance to legalise modified vehicles and ensure compliance across the board.”

The aftermarket supply and service industry has been active in the region for many years, but so far there has been no official regulatory body in the country. Currently under UAE national law modifying a vehicle’s engine without permission is a fine of AED1,000, 12 black points and 30 days in the impound lot. Failure to get a technical certificate for your car’s modifications on the other hand, is a fine of AED400.
