Munich is preparing a concept drop-top at the 2017 d’Elegance, and it sure looks like an 8 Series Convertible from where we’re standing…

UPDATE: BMW has confirmed that this roadster concept is indeed a preview of a production model green-lit for sale in 2018.

German carmaker BMW is preparing to draw crowds at the 2017 Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance in California with a grand convertible .

Ready for its debut on August 17, the latest BMW concept is veiled in mystery, as BMW merely released one teaser shot of the car and no information to go with it.

We can assume the concept is a drop-top version of the BMW 8 Series announced earlier this year in Italy, with a few details sticking out of that silhouette such as the rear spoiler and the taillights.

BMW’s favourite hobby of doing one-off concepts at concours shows stared in 2016 with the Coupé Mille Miglia

BMW has a history of introducing one-off concepts at concours shows such as Pebble Beach and Lake Como, which unfortunately doesn’t bode well for this latest roadster because if history shows, the Germans don’t tend to put any of these dream cars on the road.

In 2006 it started with the BMW Coupé Mille Miglia concept unveiled on the lawns of Concorso d’Eleganza Villa d’Este on the shores of Lake Como. Two years later BMW surprised everyone with the M1 Hommage mid-engined supercar that we’re still pining for. Then in 2011 the retro 328 Hommage appeared, followed by the 3.0 CSL Hommage in 2015, and just last year, the 2002 Hommage which premiered at the Pebble Beach Concours.

The BMW 8 Series concept was shown off earlier this year at Villa d’Este

That’s a lot of dream cars that Munich still has to answer for, so we hope this latest roadster concept doesn’t come with merely an Hommage suffix.

However going by the new 8 Series which has been green-lit for production as a 2019 model, a drop-top version in two weeks’ time at Pebble Beach seems like a safe bet. We’ll keep you updated.
