Fiat Chrysler Automobiles (FCA) Middle East has confirmed to Auto Middle East that the Alfa Romeo Stelvio, the first-ever SUV in the company’s 107-year history, is making its regional debut at November’s  2017 Dubai motor show before reaching local showrooms early next year.

The highlight at the Dubai show will undoubtedly be the Stelvio in hottest Quadrifoglio guise, delivering over 500 horsepower from a Ferrari-developed engine — it’s handy when both brands fall under the FCA umbrella.

With this kind of styling coupled to a 510 horsepower 2.9-litre twin-turbocharged V6 engine, and Alfa Romeo’s Q4 all-wheel drive technology that can send all the grunt to the rear wheels alone, the Stelvio Quadrifoglio should have a fair crack at attracting buyers in the GCC region looking for exclusivity.

The Italian company promises a segment benchmark when it comes to handling and performance, not shying away from comparisons to Porsche’s Cayenne Turbo (AED532,000, 520 horsepower) or BMW’s X5 M (AED550,000, 567 horsepower).

Developed in Modena, the same place where you’ll find sister brands Maserati and Ferrari, the Stelvio takes its name from the second-highest mountain pass in Europe connecting Italy and Switzerland over the Alps at an altitude of nearly 2,800 metres. It’s hairpins galore, so Alfa Romeo isn’t afraid of a boast or two when it comes to its premiere in the SUV class.

Slightly shorter than something like a Cayenne, and lower too, the Stelvio Quadrifoglio also has a kerb weight unheard of in this class, quoted at around 1.7 tonnes while rival figures stand at over two tonnes. Apart from generous use of aluminium in mechanical components, some of the car’s body panels are made of carbon fibre, and customers can specify carbon ceramic brakes and carbon fibre racing bucket seats if they want to go even leaner with the Stelvio Quadrifoglio.

Mated to an eight-speed automatic transmission, the engine puts power to all four corners, and there is a Race driving mode (with 150-millisecond gear changes and aluminium paddle shifters behind the steering wheel…) that Alfa Romeo says draws know-how from Ferrari’s motor sport expertise. The Stelvio can behave like a rear-wheel drive car with 100 percent of the power sent to the back, and a twin-clutch rear axle transfers torque between the wheels separately for extra control.

Prices haven’t been announced yet but expect a confirmation when the Alfa Romeo Stelvio Quadrifoglio makes its Middle East premiere this November at the 2017 Dubai motor show.
