Watch the Jaguar E-Pace set a Guinness world record

Ever the hype man, Jaguar has launched its new E-Pace compact crossover with a barrel-roll stunt

When it comes to hype few car manufacturers out there are as extravagant as Jaguar Land Rover. A few years ago for its XE saloon Jaguar helicoptered the car into the launch party at London’s Earls Court, and when it came to the XF model they had the thing cross the river Thames on tight-wires. And when Jaguar launched the first crossover in the company’s history, they had it do a 360 degree loop-the-loop setting a Guinness world record in the process.

Now for the company’s new E-Pace compact crossover there are naturally things to jump over and set another Guinness world record in order for us to notice it (because let’s face it, it looks a lot more ordinary than the F-Pace…) and bask in its barrel-rolling aptitude.

The record, for “the Furthest Barrel Roll in a Production Vehicle”, was set during the car’s global premiere at London’s ExCel exhibition centre chosen for its roominess, where the car needed a 160 meter run-up to make the 15 meter barrel-roll gap.

The driver behind the wheel was stuntman Terry Grant, who says no production car has ever cleanly completed a barrel-roll. “It has always been an ambition of mine to perform one ever since I was a boy,” said Grant, who also did the loop-the-loop in the F-Pace.

The stunt took months of preparation, with ramps modeled on CAD data and with Grant experiencing forces of 5.5g during the 270-degree roll.

Jaguar new E-Pace compact crossover will be available with a choice of two 2.0-litre four-cylinder turbocharged engines when it goes on sale later this year before arriving in the Middle East. Prices are expected to start from about AED140,000.
