Japanese carmaker Honda has revealed its Ohio, US-built 2018 Accord saloon claiming a lighter body, all-new design, more interior space than ever and a new line of turbocharged engines.

The car’s world debut was held in Detroit, right in the face of America’s Big Three — Ford, General Motors and Chrysler — whose models can only languish behind the best selling-mid-size saloon in the US. The 10th generation Accord is all-new according to Honda, boasting less weight but higher strength and the world’s first application of a 10-speed automatic transmission in a front-wheel drive car.

More room, and more toys to play with in the 2018 Accord, with a migration to two screens instead of the current, cluttered, three screen design

Honda’s designers say they tried to emphasize a wide body and lower stance, with a combination of visual and physical tricks – the wheelbase has grown by over 2.1-inches while the height has been reduced slightly, and the wheel tracks widened. Inside, the occupants sit lower than before looking out through a larger greenhouse but without the decidedly unsporty tall seating position.

Shorter overhangs afford the 2018 Accord better proportions and Honda added a somewhat aggressive grille up front crowning a lower, longer bonnet. This is all in an effort to make the car look kinda rear-wheel drive, and we probably have to admit it works better than with most rivals.

Rear passengers get a couple of inches more room for their legs, and the 2018 Accord gains increased boot space by nearly a cubic foot, which gives you something like a 15 percent larger boot. The RTA will love it.

Inside the 2018 Accord, Honda added a new 8.0-inch touchscreen to go with a 7.0-inch drivers instrument display, with the infotainment controlled by familiar smartphone-like interactions and featuring Apple CarPlay and Android Auto compatibility. Available kit includes a new 6.0-inch head-up display, and a sound system with up to 10 speakers.

In the US at least, when the 2018 Accord goes on sale later this year it will be available with a choice of 1.5-litre and 2.0-litre turbocharged four-cylinder engines, rated at 192 horsepower and 252 horsepower respectively. That means the entry level 1.5-litre makes more horsepower than the Accord’s current 2.4-litre naturally aspirated engine.

The base motor is also good for 260Nm of torque from as low as 1,500rpm, and the 2.0-litre turbo develops 370Nm compared to the current V6-engined Accord and its 342Nm. The latter unit also shares much of its design with the new Civic Type R that’s rated at over 300 horsepower.
