2016 Mercedes-Benz GLE Coupe | New Car Review
* A fresh offering to grace the SUV line-up.
* Cramped rear seats.
Athletic and purposeful are words used in the brochure to describe the GLE Coupe, but truth be told, they’re unable to do justice to its striking silhouette. With broad shoulders, pronounced wheel arches and a dynamic stance, the GLE Coupe is a work of art; a true masterpiece.
Mirroring the cabin found in the GLE, the interiors of the GLE Coupe are exquisite in that typical Germanic fashion. With soft leather adorning everything from the dashboard and seats to the arm rests and steering wheel, the interiors encapsulate occupants in a world of luxury.
Features are aplenty on the GLE Coupe and range from entertainment and safety to various driver aids. While the collision prevention system brakes to avoid a collision autonomously, the Pre-Safe Plus helps prepare occupants for front, rear and rollover accidents. For the audiophiles, there’s also a Bang & Olufsen sound system to be found.
What’s on offer?
Under the hood of the GLE Coupe resides a 5.5 litre turbocharged V8 engine that churns out 557 horsepower at 5,750 RPM and 700 Nm of torque at 5,500 RPM. Mated to an AMG Speedshift Plus 7 speed transmission, the GLE 63 accelerates to the 100 km/h mark in 4.3 seconds and bears a top speed of 250 km/h.
While the GLE Coupe is merely a compressed GLE and raises the question of whether it deserves to be an independent model, it is without a doubt a compelling rival to the X6. Will it ever be able to defeat the Bavarian on its own ground, though? That’s something only time will tell.
