Review Summary:

When looking at buying a , brands like Toyota spring to mind with the RAV4 as their main offering. But for those who dig deeper, there are brands like Renault that have the Koleos, which not looks nicer but offers better value for money as well.

Pros

The 2015 isn't only better equipped, but also a lot more reasonably priced than its rivals.

Cons

The front end of the compact SUV and the dashboard could do with a redesign.

Looks

At first glance, the Koleos sits quite high off the ground, which in turn gives it a more rugged and ready stance. Although the design of the front end is questionable with its computer mouse-like headlights, the side profile is tastefully done and the rear is simply gorgeous.

Feels

Designed to seat five individuals, the Koleos offers more than sufficient head and leg room for rear passengers and with 450 litres of cargo space behind the rear seats, adequate room for their belongings as well. However, though it’s all well and good in the second half of the compact SUV, the same cannot be said for the former. The protruding upper section of the dashboard looks like it hasn’t been aligned properly with the lower section and though some may find the silhouette of a Hershey’s Kisses between the central A/C vents unique, I personally think it looks ridiculous.

Engineering

It was back in 2009 when the video of UAE rally champion, Mohammed bin Sulayem navigating the Koleos through the dunes of the Emirates went viral; up until then, many people were simply oblivious to the off-road potential of the compact French SUV. The 2015 model develops this, with the option of hill descent control, hill start assist and even a locking central differential.

What’s on offer?

At the heart of the 2015 Renault Koleos is a 2.5 litre 4 cylinder engine that produces a decent 170 horsepower and 226 Nm of torque. Mated to a CVT transmission, the two wheel drive variant sprints from zero to 100 km/h in 9.9 seconds, while the heavier 4×4 variant takes a few seconds more to complete it in 10.3 seconds.

Summing it…

A Bose entertainment system, electric seats, blind spot monitoring and a panoramic roof are just some of the features that you can enjoy with the 2015 Renault Koleos and though I don’t need to say any more, it also costs approximately AED 15,000 less than the Toyota RAV4. It’s a no-brainer, really.
