Review Summary:

The Duster is a jointly produced by French manufacturer and its Romanian subsidiary Dacia. Marketed as the Duster in our part of the world, the compact SUV goes against American and Korean rivals such as the Ford EcoSport and Kia Sportage.

Pros

Extremely well priced
Spacious interior for a compact SUV

Cons

Should have been offered with the option of a bigger engine

Looks

When the Duster was conceived in 2010, it received social status comparable to that of a legend. The whole concept of offering the average Joe a compact SUV that costed as much a hatchback from other manufacturers, was a completely new path other brands didn’t even consider venturing onto. The innovation continued in the design studio, with the Duster looking fresh and unlike anything that was already available on the market. Although it wore a small price tag, style wasn’t sacrificed; arrow headed tail lamps, a pentagonal rear windshield and flared wheel arches, are just some of the design elements that made the Duster a unique little SUV.

Feels

The simplicity of the interior breathes a of breath of fresh air as well. Unlike most cars nowadays that cram in as many buttons as the cockpit of a commercial airline, the Duster sticks to what is necessary. Seating capacity is surprisingly capacious and with the option of folding the second row of seats, 1,636 litres of cargo space is made available.

Engineering

Along the centre console rests a small rotary knob which allows driver’s to choose from three driving modes, namely, 2WD, Auto, and Lock. While 2WD distributes engine torque amongst the front wheels, Auto calculates grip at all four tires and accordingly distributes power to those in most need. To maximize its off-road potential, Lock mode continuously distributes power to all four wheels and sets engine control and braking that is suited to 4×4 usage.

What’s on offer?

Under its hood, the 2015 Renault Duster hides a 2.0 litre in-line 4 engine that produces 135 horsepower and 195 Nm of torque. Mated to a 4 speed automatic transmission, the Duster dispatches a 100 km/h run in 10.4 seconds and tops out at 177 km/h.

Summing it…

The Renault Duster is honest, more than anything else. Everything from its price tag to its simplicity is a clear indication that it isn’t trying to be something it isn’t. Not only is the compact SUV better than the rest with its innovation, but with its price tag as well. The Duster will save you some dough compared to the Ford EcoSport and against the Kia Sportage as well. So now you’ve been informed, spend wisely…

I have been using Mid range duster since 2014, I have noticed the issue that, front wheels are always blackened with break dust ever since I bought the car and jerking the vehicle when slowing down from top gear. I have complained the same to a technician on my first service itself and he replied that, it is not a complaint but characteristics of the particular vehicle. Anybody experience the same and please advice is it repairable, or where to complaint?

First, thanks for making this great website! Your tutorial about CSS and HTML are so easy to understand, it’s a pleasure to read them.I have a question. Before finding this website, I actually didn’t know that you could use the prn-lestailed notepad in Windows as a code editor. So my question is how far can you use the notepad to make your own website? Would it be nessecarry to find a more advanced editor like edit++ to make website which can be launced? What’s the limit of notepad?

It’s definitely colorful, not that that’s bad or anything. Those two things are not going to change in one book. She loves the sun but the man she loves belongs to the night. Please clarify regarding Duster,’s 2 Liters engine. Someone told me Renault Duster has Qashqai Nissan Engine Gearbox and Airconditioner.
If its true then these are plus points points.

The problems with my car (Renault duster) started from day 1 of its purchase from Abu Dhabi showroom.

The first day I drove my car for hardly 10 km and the engine stopped all of a sudden during parking the car. The engine body part got all heated up hardening the steering with the handle break at the same time.

My first day with my new car ended into a disheartening experience.

Not only this the car also has technical bugs like the Bluetooth in this car does not work efficiently at all.

Even if the radio is powered off you hear a continuous beeping and buzzing noise till the engine is on. This gets us difficult to attend calls while driving.

The exterior parts of the car body showed some whitish spots which is not the texture but it looks like the finishing wasn’t done elegantly.

After such a pathetic experience I tried contacting and addressing the tremendous issues I faced all through. To my explanation they said “sir once the car goes out of the showroom we can only repair it and not replace it”.

After a prolonged discussion and argument I finally surrendered and agreed for a repair because although it is my first car the issues got all my novelty down and the no replacement rule was very depressing.

I kept my car with them for almost a week for servicing and repairs.

After almost giving my car for 4 times of repair and servicing the Bluetooth doesn’t work till date. I can very strongly say that they don’t have efficient technical/ support team. And I surely do not recommend one to go for this car

    HI Zaran

It was really interesting the way you penned this article which is going to make it quite easy for a first time buyer to be able to decide on his/her purchase. However, your reply to rage has raised a question, whether you were praising the vehicle above in your article or just writing a review for the sake of it. request you to make it more simpler about the vehicle worth. and also if you could briefly make a comparison with nissan juke, mitsubishi asx, kia sportage, Hyundai Tucson, Renault koleos, & Renault Captur. i know its not a bit comparison but could be a lot but these vehicles are in my mind. Appreciate if you could leave your feedback.
    Thanks

      Hi Mohammed,

Hope you’re well and that you had a great weekend.

The Duster is a wonderful car for AED 49,900 – not a whole lot can offer you the same sort of value for money that it does. Having said that, there are much better cars out there that will trump it as far as design and driverability are concerned, you just have to be willing to pay the difference.

All the rivals you’ve mentioned can be broken down into two sub-segments (Mini SUVs and Compact SUVs).

Mini SUV – Nissan Juke, Renault Captur.
The Juke starts out at AED 66,250 while the Captur flaunts a much more affordable price tag of AED 57,900. While the Juke has undergone an update for 2015, the Captur is an all-round newer model. With quite different personalities, I’d pick the Captur if I had to choose, but that’s just because I’m not too big a fan of the Juke’s exterior.

Compact SUV – Mitsubishi ASX, Kia Sportage, Hyundai Tucson, Renault Koleos.
Wearing a price tag of AED 61,000, the Mitsubishi ASX is the most affordable of the lot and rightly so, as it’s the most dated too. Kia’s Sportage will offer you the best value for money in this class as it will bring the most features to the table. On the other hand, the Tucson has just been updated with an all-new model and is the priciest of the bunch at AED 81,900 – it is also the one I’d highly recommend.

Hope this has helped you out. If there’s anything else you’d like further clarity on, don’t hesitate to get in touch.

      Regards,

      Zaran

        Hi Zaran

Thank you for your reply. However, I would like to understand in a one to one comparison rather than its price tag, to be able to decide and go for the best suitable one. For example, Renault Duster vs Chevrolet Trax, duster vs ASX, duster vs Tucson, duster vs captur, duster vs Juke, duster vs sportage & cerato (sedan) if you could let us know in this way it will be highly appreciated. And also if you could throw some light on standard/regular engine vs turbo engine (captur has). i like captur pretty much but only 1 thing is bothering me is its 1.2 engine power vs 1.8 or 2.0 of others.

Thanks in advance for your one more superb reply.

          Hi Mohammed,

All the cars you’ve mentioned already have a Buyer’s Guide entry on our website. Along with each review, we’ve also made it a point to include a detailed spec sheet which should help you out in a technical comparison. Depending on what you narrow your options down to, it’s always best to enroll in a test drive from the showroom so that you’re confident when making your purchase.

As for the turbo engine, don’t let the displacement fool you. The 1.2 litre turbo probably puts out as much power as the 1.8 litre engine you’re comparing it to. Turbos are revolutionizing the market as they’re offering the same amount of power from smaller engines. The only thing you’ll need to keep an eye out for is a slight delay in power delivery, known as turbo lag.

          Regards,

          Zaran

      Hi Rage,

The Duster is a popular offering from Renault and one that has taken the market by storm simply because of its price and value proposition. At AED 49,900 not a lot of quality can be expected and frankly, it isn’t delivered either. Having driven the Trax and written a comprehensive Road Test report on it, I can tell you that it is a cracker of a car and one that is well worth its price tag. In the Duster’s price range, not a lot comes close to it, meaning, in its own way it is the King of the segment. If you’re looking for a better car on all counts, however, then the Trax is what you should be considering. Just be prepared to pay the difference.

      Zaran
