Review Summary:

The Mercedes-Benz GLA made its first public appearance at the Frankfurt Auto Show in 2013 and ever since, the attention it’s garnered has only grown exponentially. A little surprise then, for the first model to adopt the brand’s revised nomenclature.

Pros

* Exterior styling is sure to turn a few heads

Cons

* Can get a little pricey if you opt for the AMG variant

Looks

The broad, intimidating countenance of the GLA is composed of angular headlamps and crisp contours that direct themselves towards a sizeable snout. Following design cues that were made popular by the A-Class hatchback it’s based on, the GLA can’t be credited for being too imaginative as far as the design is concerned, but it undeniably is a sensational sight, especially in AMG guise.

Feels

In typical Germanic flair, the cabin is home to wood on the dashboard, an abundance of fine leather and splashes of silver trim on the door panels to accentuate the whole experience. Atop the dashboard sits a neat infotainment screen that may not be as plush as the ones found in Audi’s, but does form a great part of the brand’s identity.

Engineering

For a compact SUV that measures 4,417mm long, 1,804mm wide, and 1,494mm tall, the GLA is exceptionally well equipped. With 12 speakers, including a bass speaker and a 9-channel DSP amplifier, the 450W Harman Kardon surround sound system is just one of the many treats that it offers.

What’s on offer?

Powered by a 2.0 litre turbocharged 4-cylinder engine, the GLA 250 directs 211 horsepower and 350 NM of torque through a 7 speed dual clutch automatic transmission to the front wheels. What all that power translates into, is a top speed of 235 km/h and a capability to dispatch a 100 km/h sprint in just 7.2 seconds. Impressive, up until you learn the AMG variant chucks out 360 horsepower, 450 Nm of torque, and will whizz you to the 100 km/h mark in 4.8 seconds!

Summing it…

The Mercedes-Benz GLA is an interesting one. If you take its category rivals into account, the GLA would be up against the likes of the Lexus NX and the Audi Q3, fair rivals for the GLA 250. But what about the GLA 45 AMG, you ask? Well, that’s in a league of its own…
