Review Summary:

The QX80 is a full size luxury SUV that has gone through a series of ups and downs from its humble beginnings in 1996. While the first generation model was based on Nissan’s Pathfinder platform, the second generation utilized the underpinnings of the Nissan Armada. And the changes didn’t end there, because currently in its third generation, the QX80 now adopts the all-new Nissan Patrol platform.

Pros

Spacious would be an understatement when describing the space within the cabin of the QX80.

Cons

It's much too similar to the Nissan Patrol to even be considered another model.

Looks

The all-new Nissan Patrol is suave, elegant, refined and a whole lot of other words that you wouldn’t associate with a dune annihilating SUV. However, the boys at Infiniti have taken this dignified and graceful outer shell and converted it into something that now resides on the borderlines of horrendous. A grille too big, headlights too small and a pudgy rear end are just some of the reasons the QX80 isn’t as charming as its economical brother, the Nissan Patrol.

Feels

Surprisingly similar to the Patrol, the interior of the 2015 Infiniti QX80 boasts large, well bolstered seats, a neat centre console and an abundance of wood trim on the dashboard, door panels and even the steering wheel. From the looks of it, comfort was of paramount importance when the QX80 was being put together and as a result, even passengers in the third row benefit from electrically reclining seats.

Engineering

Infiniti’s attention to safety is apparent in the QX80. Apart from the usual Blind Spot Monitoring, Lane Departure Warning, Tire Pressure Monitoring System, Adaptive Cruise Control and Forward Collision Warning, the QX80 is packed with some interesting safety features. The Intelligent Brake Assist (IBA) analyses the vehicle’s speed and the distance of the vehicle ahead and accordingly automatically applies the brakes if the driver doesn’t respond in time. Additionally, the Distance Control Assist (DCA) system makes use of the sensors located at the front of the car and intuitively prompts the driver to release the throttle and apply the brakes as needed in slowing traffic.

What’s on offer?

At the heart of the gargantuan SUV is a 5.6 litre V8 engine that whips out 400 horsepower and a tree uprooting 560 Nm of torque. Mated to a 7 speed transmission, the QX80 delivers power through a four wheel drive system and completes the 0 – 100 km/h run in a mighty impressive 7.3 seconds.

Summing it…

At the end of the day, the QX80 is really just a dressed up Nissan Patrol with a fancier badge upfront. If you’re that brand conscious, then by all means please go ahead and spend anywhere between AED 288,000 to AED 319,000 for the QX80. But if you’re the rational kinds, then head to the Nissan showroom and pick up the Patrol, because not only is it a better looking version of the same car, but it will save you some dough as well.
