2015 Infiniti QX70 | new car review
Pros
Decent amount of tech to improve the ride and handling of the QX70
Cons
External appearance and interior design need a makeover.
Looks
The first generation model of the QX70 ran from 2003 to 2008 and I’d like to think it stuck around for only six years because it wasn’t very pretty. But then in 2009, the second generation model emerged and all of a sudden, that first generation model became so much more desirable. I’m not sure if it’s the awkward headlights or just the structure of the QX70, but the only thing that comes to mind whenever I see one, is a wild boar.
Feels
Boring, dull, monotonous, call it what you may but the lack of creativity in the 2015 Infiniti QX70 is dreadful. Of course, it all feels very good because it is an Infiniti but that tired centre console and poorly designed steering wheel are in dire need of an immediate makeover.
Engineering
With the engine’s weight toward the center and the wheels pushed to the corners, the balance of the QX70 is believed to enhance its handling. With the optional Continuous Damping Control (CDC®) the car automatically tightens or softens the suspension when you’re cornering or cruising, or allows you to manually set sports mode. Additionally, the Rear Active Steer system turns the rear wheels for a sharper turn-in as well.
What’s on offer?
Under the curvaceous hood sits either a 3.7 litre V6 or a 5.0 litre V8. Although both engines are mated to a 7 speed automatic transmission, the former churns out 329 horsepower and 360 Nm of torque, while the latter ups the ante to 390 horsepower and a ground shaking 500 Nm of torque. With power being sent to all four wheels, the 3.7 litre completes a 0 – 100 km/h run in 6.3 seconds, while the 5.0 litre tidies it up in 5.6 seconds.
Summing it…
If it isn’t this Japanese luxury crossover that gets you weak in the knees, you could always jump ship to Toyota’s luxury brand Lexus and pick up the better looking RX for a similar amount of dough. But, that would be a silly move because you’d have ignored the wonderful Audi Q5 that costs just AED 170,000!
