Review Summary:

It seems that just couldn’t help themselves; they call the Rapide a “saloon” or “fastback”, but it still looks like some mad sports car. And who’s complaining?

Stylish by all means

Cramped space for rear passengers

The 2015 Aston Martin Rapide S has a slightly more startled look than its brothers and sisters. It sports an unusually large grille and larger headlamps (which feature DRLs), making it look smaller than it actually is. The back is spectacular but it’s what they’ve done at the sides which impresses me most. They just couldn’t bring themselves to build a proper saloon, so they’ve tried to disguise the back doors; so much so that actually getting in is a challenge in itself.

The interior of the Rapide S is fantastic, as dark leather is held in place thanks to plenty of exquisite stitching. All the controls are easy to find and operate, such as the seat adjustment buttons, which are actually attached to the centre console. Space is a bit cramped in the back, but otherwise everything seems to be in order.

Constructed from lightweight aluminium and held together with sophisticated epoxy resin, the Rapide S uses the latest methods of Aston Martin’s traditional engineering philosophy; keep things light. The old Rapide has been adapted into the S by combining various innovations developed in other models, like the Vanquish to provide a rigid driving experience.

What’s on offer?

There is only one Rapide S, and it costs a staggering AED 900,000. But you do get a lot for your money; four doors for example. You also get a 6.0 litre V12 engine capable of churning out 550hp and 620 Nm of torque.

Summing it…

It’s a tough call between the Rapide S and its Italian rivals. And in all serious it is matched very well by the Maserati Quattoporte. It looks great both inside and out, but when I saw that its V12 “only” produces 550hp, I felt let-down. But hey, it’s how it uses that power I suppose…
