2015 Mini Cooper Roadster | new car review
The Mini Cooper Roadster is marginally better looking than it's tin-top sibling, the Mini Cooper Coupe.
If you analyze the Mini Cooper Roadster properly, there's no need for it in the brand's line-up.
The Mini Cooper Coupe is by far the most dreary vehicle that has ever worn the brand’s insignia and the Mini Cooper Roadster is, unfortunately, that very same vehicle with a roof that can be stowed away. Due to the lack of a roof spoiler, the Cooper Roadster is definitely better looking when parked alongside its conservative sibling that refuses to take its top off. But let’s not get carried away, because at the end of the day, the Roadster is still struggling to get past border control and enter the world of acceptable looking automobiles.
With an abundance of all things round and a combination of contrasting trim and upholstery colours, the cabin of the 2015 MINI Cooper Roadster is instantly recognizable as one from the funky German marque. Although the seats are comfortable and it all feels very good, the ginormous speedometer that seems to have been inspired by a wall clock, isn’t to everyone’s liking, including my own.
Safety hasn’t been skimped on in the Mini Cooper Roadster. Equipped with Bi-xenon headlamps that adapt to the direction of the road, Runflat Tyres that ensure you can drive longer distances without having to stop immediately and a rear spoiler that reduces lift on the rear axle to provide greater balance, are just some of the features in addition to the standard stability and traction control systems.
What’s on offer?
Under the hood of the standard Roadster resides a 1.6 litre direct injection unit that stirs up 121 horsepower and boasts a top speed of 192 km/h. The Roadster S on the other hand, produces significantly more horsepower thanks to a twin turbocharger, 60 more to be precise and tops out at 222 km/h.
Let’s get a couple of things straight. Firstly, the Mini Cooper Roadster comes with the very same engines that have been fitted into the Mini Cooper Cabrio. Secondly, the Mini Cooper Cabrio is a much, much better looking vehicle. And lastly, the Mini Cooper Cabrio is shockingly cheaper. So why would anyone opt for an uglier and more expensive vehicle? Quite frankly, I’m not too sure.
