Review Summary:

Introduced as a concept back in 2011 at the North American International Auto Show, the MINI Paceman is a compact 3-Door crossover that is based on its five door sibling, the Countryman.

Rail system as opposed to centre console is a neat and innovative concept.

Price is unquestionably high.

Although the MINI Countryman and Paceman look very much alike from the front, that’s where all the differences end. As you walk around the car, you’ll notice it is 12mm longer, has an almost coupe-like stance with its two doors and sloping roof. On the whole, it is definitely more pleasant to look at than the MINI Countryman, but still far from something you’d wink at on the highway.

Instead of a centre console, the 2015 is fitted with something a little different, a center rail, that begins after the gear lever and runs all the way to the rear seats. Everything from cup holders and mobile holders, to armrests and iPod holders click into place and slide forwards and backwards. As far as space is concerned, the Countryman offers more than adequate leg and head room for both front and rear seat passengers.

Safety features are something the 2015 MINI Cooper Paceman is adequately equipped with. In addition to driver, front passenger and side airbags, curtain airbags come as standard. These pillow-like airbags cover the top half of the side windows, front and rear, guaranteeing impact protection and safeguarding against injuries from flying glass.

What’s on offer?

122 horsepower and 160 Nm of torque is what the standard Paceman pushes out to its front wheels. The Paceman S adds a little more excitement to the equation with 190 horsepower and 260 Nm of torque. However, if it’s real kicks you’re after, the 218 horsepower and 300 Nm of torque generating John Cooper Works Edition is the one you’d be interested in.

Summing it…

If it’s four useable seats, neat features and a MINI badge you’re after, options boil down to the Countryman and Paceman, really. Take your pick, though, we’d have the Paceman. It just looks nicer…
