Review Summary:

The is up against some stiff competition. Quirky looks might not be enough, however.

Pros

Quirky looks to help it stand out from its competition.

Cons

Interior is shockingly tight.

Looks

do not make the best looking cars these days, but things do seem to be changing direction with the new 208. Despite its plump undercarriage, the intended market for this car will likely be drawn to its quirky curves and inoffensive expression. It doesn’t have the cutting edge that is found on its rivals, but it is certainly one of the better-looking offerings from the French marque.

Feels

The 2015 Peugeot 208 is a compact supermini and is naturally small by design. One just has to take note of the go-kart sized steering wheel to realise that taller drivers will struggle. The interior is nicely laid out, but space and comfort are not in abundance. If the driver happens to be 6ft tall then rear passengers had better be children.

Engineering

Peugeot have gone through a lot of effort to improve safety, with a collapsible steering column coming as standard to reduce risk of injury in the event of an accident. Notably, the 208 is 173kg lighter than its predecessor, the 207, which was famed for its weight-hampered performance.

What’s on offer?

Powered by a 1.6 litre 4-cylinder engine, the 208 remains good for 120 horsepower and 160 Nm of torque. What those figures do translate into, is a top speed of 216 km/h and the ability to dispatch 100 km/h in 9.9 seconds from a standstill.

Summing it…

Like most superminis, the 208 is not going to be a common sight on the UAE roads, chiefly because the market usually want larger cars. But for nipping around the city side streets, the 208 seems to be an ideal candidate. The build quality seems much improved, and hopefully the fact that it has been lightened will add a slice of fun to the performance. Taller drivers, however, keep your options open.
