Review Summary:

An abbreviation of the cities Milan and Turin, - the former where it was designed and the latter where it was assembled – and a play on the Italian word ‘mito’, meaning ‘legendary’, the 2015 MiTo is a three door which competes against Germany’s Audi A1 and BMW 1-Series.

Pros

Superb styling matched with a reasonable price tag make the MiTo an exceptional offering.

Cons

Materials within the cabin could be improved.

Looks

Standing 4.06 meters long, 1.44 meters tall and 1.72 meters wide, the 2015 Alfa Romeo MiTo isn’t the biggest out there, but it definitely could qualify for being the prettiest. Taking inspiration from Alfa’s icon of style and technology, the MiTo borrows the shape of its windows, headlights and chrome framed LED tail lights from the beautiful 8C Competizione. Compared to the competition reigning from Germany, the MiTo comes off as a jewel in the automotive design world.

Feels

Hitting just the right spots, the cabin of the MiTo is sporty, yet welcoming. While carbon fiber trim stretches along the dashboard and door panels, drivers’ receive a thick flat-bottomed steering wheel, which goes a long way in connoting the Italian hatchback’s pretensions. In terms of space, there’s a decent amount of head and legroom for front and rear seat passengers, with an added bonus of 270 litres cargo room.

Engineering

Breaking away from the ‘One Size Fits All’ philosophy, the MiTo offers customers the choice to decorate the headlight surrounds, tail light frames and mirror fairings in five different ways: Polished Chrome, Satinised Chrome, Matte Black, Gloss Black, and Titanio Grey. Going one step further, customers can also differentiate their MiTo from the others with a white, black, or red contrasting roof.

What’s on offer?

Ensuring the MiTo is more than just all show and no go, the guys at Alfa Romeo have bestowed the little hatchback with a 1.4 litre turbocharged engine that is capable of churning out 135 horsepower and 206 Nm of torque. Swap the drive mode into Dynamic, however, and in addition to the dual clutch transmission working even quicker, torque output jumps to a remarkable 230 Nm. Equipped with Start / Stop technology and GSI (Gear Shift Indicator), the MiTo’s sportiness is no compromise for efficiency.

Summing it…

If you’re one who wants to strut a German badge at the front of their hatchback, then you’d better head out to the Audi or BMW showroom and book an A1 or 1-Series. But if you’re someone who wants a premium hatchback that looks better and costs less than its German counterparts, then it’s the MiTo you should be heading for. It really is an Italian masterpiece.
