Review Summary:

The Touareg is Volkswagen’s mid-size SUV offering. Not a stand-out beauty by any means, but equipped enough to cater for most needs.

Well equipped in comparison to its rivals.

Lack of original styling both inside and out.

There is nothing overly original about the styling of the 2015 . It is almost identical to its baby brother, the Tiguan, with its pronounced hips and chrome-clad grille. A very typical VW frontage leads an overall modest, yet acceptable, design outcome. It won’t get your pulse racing, but you can be rest assured that you’ll look smart driving around town.

The Touareg’s interior was largely donated by the VW Passat, and still for 2015 there is not much to make it feel any different. The seats are supportive and comfortable and all the instruments are operated with standard VW ease. While everything is wonderfully tidy and well finished, the Touareg lacks a certain X-Factor.

Volkswagen wants you to take the Touareg . They want you to show the rest of the world what they can do; as such a lot of effort has been put into off-road sorcery. 4MOTION permanent four-wheel drive works mysteriously to detect deviations in the terrain, adjusting the power output to each wheel accordingly. Air suspension and the design of the undercarriage will add to a comfortable experience.

What’s on offer?

Prices start at around AED 171,994, and with that you do get a fair amount of goodies. The principle model has a 3.6 litre V6 under its bonnet and boasts 280hp as well as 360Nm of torque. Best of all it sits seven people, although obviously this does reduce boot space. The top of the range model, the R-Line, is significantly more expensive.

Summing it

The first generation Touareg was, by popular opinion, a wet fish. And that is the reputation that it is still trying to fight off today. The second generation came out in late 2010, and by now people should have spotted the massive improvements. It is a far neater package and is as well-equipped as anything from Japan. We like it, and we hope you will too.
