Review Summary:

The VW Jetta is a Golf with a saloon boot bolted to the rear. It fills the small car classification below the Passat, but in all honesty, does it need to exist?

Pros

It's based on the Golf

Cons

Boring looks and questionable existence

Looks

Take a look at the VW Golf; pretty good-looking, yes? Agreed. Take a look at the VW Passat; not creative, but certainly not ugly. Mate two decent cars together and you’d expect to create a very pretty offspring. Sadly, with the Jetta, this has not happened. It is, by design, a Golf with a saloon boot nailed to the back. It bears no resemblance to the Golf. There is no creativity, no depth, and nothing to get excited about at all.

Feels

Inside the Jetta there is a brief respite from the exterior dross. But that is to be expected since all the interior surroundings come from the Golf and other VW offerings. But when all is said and done, you can pretend you’re driving a Golf or Passat, but that won’t stop those outside looking at you and sniggering.

Engineering

Fortunately, while the point of this car may be more of a mystery, it is still made by VW; therefore we know that it is all screwed together properly. The usual finishing is up to expected standards and the engine under the bonnet can be found in other models.

What’s on offer?

Prices begin at AED 72,167 for the 2.0 litre variant and at AED 81,950 for the 2.5 litre version. The former produces 115 horsepower and accelerates from naught to 100 km/h in 12.6 seconds, while the latter with its 170 horsepower, does so in just 9.0 seconds.

Summing it

I hate panning cars without having driven them but please note the following: it is smaller, less comfortable, less powerful, less economical, and not as well equipped as the Passat, yet it’s surprisingly not too far off the price tag of its elder sibling. Why did VW see the need to turn the Golf into a saloon? If you want a Golf, buy a Golf. If you want a VW saloon, buy a Passat. Sorry, Jetta, but you don’t seem to serve a purpose.

      Morning Kate,

Prices are mentioned in the article itself, however, you’ll have to get in touch with your local dealer to enquire about the availability and choice of colours on offer.

      Regards,

      Zaran
