Review Summary:

The CC is a Passat, but a Sportback version. A swooping tailgate is complemented by some neat design features. While still not overly exciting, it is a step in the right direction.

Pros

Progressive styling

Cons

More expensive than the Passat
Interior lacks sporting design

Looks

Volkswagen understates their larger saloon cars too much. How can a company inject so much style and beauty into their hatchbacks and coupes and leave us with flat paneled, soulless saloons? Well, to jazz things up a bit, they have taken a planer to the back of a Passat and come out with the CC. With the addition of interesting body creases it is certainly a step in the right direction. Not a bad job, but not one for the classics just yet.

Feels

Everything inside the 2015 Volkswagen CC is identical to the Passat, which in turn means that it all comes from the Touareg. The chances are you have purchased the CC because you wanted a sportier look, but from within the cabin there is little to make you feel sporty in any way.

Engineering

Beyond the Sportback body design, the CC is 27mm longer, 50mm lower, 36mm wider than the Passat. By lowering the centre of gravity the handling will be improved, and that will be interesting since the Passat handles that pretty well anyway. The CC is fitted with a dual-clutch DSG gearbox, which can change up a gear in a hundredth of a second. It is also available with a Fatigue Detection System, which sounds an alarm if it thinks your steering input is not in keeping with that of an awake person.

What’s on offer?

Under the hood, reside either a 2.0 litre engine, or a beefier 3.6 litre unit. While the former is good for 210 horsepower, the latter ups the ante to 300 horsepower and deals with a 0 – 100 km/h run in just 5.5 seconds. Impressive for a car of its size…

Summing it

The CC is a good looking alternative to the Passat, but more expensive. That being said, when compared to, say, an Audi A6 saloon with similar specs, it is far cheaper and much better looking. The CC is certainly worth considering.
