Review Summary:

Volkswagen compact crossover SUV, the Tiguan, is surprisingly good. This increasingly popular category boasts some stern rivals, but the Tiguan certainly is a winning candidate.

Pros

Good overall package
Spacious
Practical

Cons

Unimaginative interior

Looks

Instantly recognisable as a Volkswagen, the Tiguan boasts a familiar VW front end, with a thicker chrome grille. The 2015 certainly looks like a junior Touareg, as it shares a very similar design philosophy. The under-shield at the front gives it a robust appearance.

Feels

Volkswagen don’t play around with interior too much, and once again there is nothing in the inside of the Tiguan that you won’t have seen in other models. It isn’t such a negative as the usual array of high-quality materials are finished in a typically tidy fashion. While the interior is good, very good in fact, you will feel like just another VW owner.

Engineering

The Tiguan has been engineered to go off road as well as it tackles the city streets. The front under-shield is sturdy, and should protect the sump from the un-sighted. The “Track & Stlye” model comes with this as standard and can tackle gradients of up to 28° with ease. Efforts have also been made to ensure that the noise in the cabin is kept to an absolute minimum.

What’s on offer?

There are three primary engine options; two 2.0 litre options and one puny 1.4 litre to accompany. There are then a selection of trim levels which include the entry-level Trend & Fun model and the upper-market versions: Sport & Style and Track & Style. Standard luggage space is 470 litres, but this is increased to over 1500 litres when the back seats are down. Prices range between AED 94,530 and AED 108,888.

Summing it

Although more expensive than its Japanese rivals, mainly the RAV4 and CR-V, the Tiguan is a bridging gap between these and the other German offerings; the BMW X3 and Audi Q3. Much like the Passat, it may not be such an obvious choice, but book a test drive and see for yourself just how accommodating the Tiguan really is.
