Review Summary:

In the UAE, mid-sized SUV’s are all the rage, and will be forever more. The popular weapon of choice is, as we know, the Land Cruiser. But what does Jeep have to say about that? After all, they are the makers who started the craze in the first place.

Pros

* Great looks, well-equipped.

Cons

* No special quirks to out-wit rivals.

Looks

The 2015 has a very bold and imposing look. It has a balanced mix of sharp edges and subtle curves, and the result is a car that looks as tough as it inevitably is! The styling along the sides and around the rear-wheel arches is smart, and the back-end is very neatly arranged.

Feels

The interior of the Grand Cherokee is comfortable, with cheap-looking plastics kept to a minimum. Wood and leather coat the dash, and the controls all feel robust. The seats offer a great amount of side support and there is plenty of space for all inside. The visibility is excellent, too.

Engineering

There are two 4WD options available for you to choose from; QUADRA-Drive II employs an electronic slip-diff that can transfer up to 100% torque to all or some of the wheels, helping to keep a constant speed. Alternatively you can choose QUADRA-Trac II, which offers all-speed traction control, allowing power to be transferred to the axle which needs it most.

What’s on offer?

There four versions of the Grand Cherokee on offer: Laredo, Limited, Oveland, and Summit. There are also three engines to choose from: a 3.6 V6, 5.7 V8, and a 6.4 V8. The 6.4 will produce a face warping 470hp! The Laredo is the entry model, and starts at around AED 163,000. The top end SRT, however, costs AED 302,000.

Summing it…

On paper, the Grand Cherokee ticks all the boxes. Looks-wise it is also a winner, and there is nothing to suggest that this car won’t go off-road. There are a good amount of engine and body options so you can certainly get one to your own taste.

Pankaj – you still holding to that rating for GC vs Patrol? Consider GC 5.7L Limited 75th Yr Edition (190-200K + QuadraLift+ 5Yr/100K Service+Warr) vs Entry Level 2017 V6 Patrol (Approx. 182K)

I’m not an off-roader but would like to. Daily trips of 120Km being priority & have the needs of only 5 Seater.

    Hi,

Great review. I would appreciate your opinion on buying Toureg SEL 2016 model over the Grand Cherokee Limited 2014/15 model. My concern is longterm maintenance costs.

      Hi Swathy,

As per my knowledge, the Volkswagen should prove more affordable in the long run. I believe it’s got service intervals of every 15,000KMS as opposed to 10,000 with Jeep. To be absolutely sure, a quick visit to the service centre shall put you at ease, since they should be able to provide you with a chart for scheduled maintenance costs.

      Regards,

      Zaran

I’m planning to buy the Grand Cherokee Ladero, but still have doubts to buy the Touareq SE. Only difference is the leather and the Touareq is a bit easier on the road, but off road the grand cherokee is better, any suggestions before I decide?

I agree , But also Tuareg is more expensive like you will pay 20K more and only get leather seats, while for Grand Cherokee you can have for 140K the Loredo and u can always install leather seats or camera in the Dealer ( Showroom ) for few more AEDs .

I think overall , the Jeep wins , but still its a personal pref

If off-road is a priority and you see doing this regularly, it has to be Grand Cherokee. Keep an eye on the front bumper though, when off the black top.

2016 Audi Q7 is expected soon but if you are considering active off road use, the Grand Cherokee would outperform the other two. You will just need to be careful about the front bumper lip.

Hi, Patrol is much bigger than the Grand Cherokee. Take a call on what fits you better. In terms of maintenance, ruggedness, reliability and overall ownership experience, I tend to tilt towards the Patrol.
