Review Summary:

Released for 2013, the is a car aimed at rivaling the Audi A6, BMW 5 Series, and Mercedes E Class. It certainly looks like it should out do all of what Germany has to offer, but it doesn’t come cheap.

Lots of standard options

Rear leg room

The 2015 Maserati Ghibli is certainly a fine looking car, but without being achingly beautiful. From certain angles it looks similar to the Porsche Panamera, and that is not something to be overly proud of. The bonnet has some interesting swoops, and the side gills certainly add a sporty feel. But what is it with Maserati and very small headlamps? If they were just a few centimetres bigger then perhaps it wouldn’t look so disproportionate. Overall it’s not bad, but some tweaks needed in the future methinks.

2015 Maserati Ghibli side

The feeling inside the Ghibli is like that of no other car. Yes it has all the usual components in the usual places, but there is an X-Factor about the inside that is very difficult to summarise. It is so well refined that your passengers may never want to get out. Or, more accurately, might not be able to get out, since rear leg room isn’t exactly generous.

2015 Maserati Ghibli interior

The Ghibli has been fitted with a servo assisted hydraulic steering system, which according to other road testers provides an excellent feel. Its purpose is to provide the driver with a genuine driving experience, as opposed to an artificial one, which seems a bit ironic. An aluminium double wishbone suspension arrangement sits high up at the front end to offer an improved ride.

What’s on offer?

You can choose between the 3.0 litre and 3.0 litre S model. The entry 6-cylinder 3.0 litre will cost between AED 285,000 and AED 315,000, and with that you get a fabulous package of standard features: remote start, keyless entry, parking sensors, multimedia interface, Bluetooth, and an automatically dimming rear view mirror. In the S though, 0-100kp/h is dealt with in 5.0 seconds and at 5,500 rpm you will be pulling 410hp. The S model is a sportier option, and prices begin at around AED 319,000.

Summing it…

For a luxury mid-sized saloon, the Maserati Ghibli is as well equipped as anything else on the market, and arguably far better looking than its German rivals. But there are some niggles; rear leg room is a problem being one, and price being another. At AED 285,000, a basic Ghibli is significantly more expensive than a basic E Class. Yes you have the uniqueness of the Maserati badge, but common sense has to slot in somewhere.
