Review Summary:

The is a car you’ve either seen in the Mission Impossible film, heard your friends talk about, or happened to see in its flesh at the 2013 Dubai International Motor Show. For those living under a rock, however, it’s a 1,485 kg plug-in hybrid sports car that costs AED 635,000 and reaches a top speed of 250 km/h.

Pros

It quite simply is the future of the automotive industry.

Cons

Much too expensive for most of us to even think about.

Looks

Comprising of BMW’s LifeDrive architecture, the 2+2 seater hybrid sports car showcases superior aerodynamics and is sculpted out of environmentally friendly materials. While the upper module consists mainly of a high-strength and lightweight passenger cell made out of Carbon Fibre Reinforced Plastic, the lower drive module is composed of 100% aluminium and houses the battery, electric motor and suspension system. As far as looks go, there isn’t anything quite as space-age as the 2015 BMW i8 out there… yet.

Feels

Inside, the layering principle creates a novel relationship between functionality and clear form. The centre console is aligned towards the driver and all the instruments, in addition to two large displays are in easy reach. A low seating position, combined with lightweight seats prove that the i8 really is, in a league of its own.

Engineering

Sports cars are about more than just power; weight is a considerable factor too. The guys at BMW know this much too well and that’s why opted for Carbon Fibre Reinforced Plastic when constructing the i8. In utilizing the material, the brand also receives recognition for being the first ever to make use of Carbon Fibre Reinforced Plastic on a mass produced vehicle.

What’s on offer?

The electric drive, a powerful 131 horsepower motor, is located on the front axle. In contrast, the rear axle is driven by a powerful BMW TwinPower Turbo 1.5-litre 3-cylinder petrol engine with 231 horsepower of peak performance and up to 320 Nm of torque; combined with the electrical boost of the hybrid system, it guarantees driving pleasure. These two drive systems combine to accelerate the BMW i8 from 0 to 100 km/h in 4.4 seconds – with fuel consumption of just 2.1 litres per 100 km!

Summing it…

So how much does it all cost? Well, factoring its appearance in a Hollywood movie, remarkable performance and futuristic cabin, not a lot really. Sure, AED 750,000 is definitely not up average Joe’s alley, but it sure seems like a justified price for a vehicle that paves the way for others to follow.
