Review Summary:

The Legacy hasn't quite captured the UAE market the way it should have. However, those who have been acquainted with the Japanese sedan in the past, know it offers the ideal blend of sportiness and luxury; something it continues to do well in its sixth generation.

* It looks the best it ever has.
* Beats its rivals as far as safety features are concerned.

* Lacks a GT variant in the lineup.

Twenty six years after the very first Legacy was brought to life, the sixth generation model makes its debut. Having grown up, matured, and spent a fair bit of time understanding the workings of adulthood, it’s traded its butch styling for a sleeker and more elegant appearance. Bold creases along the hood funnel down to the large hexagonal grille and run parallel to the tapered, angular headlamps. With prominent contours along the length of the vehicle and a neat set of tail lamps to accompany, the Legacy is the most striking it’s ever been.

Retaining the overall aura of the previous generation model, the boffins have spruced up the cabin to keep up with the times, and introduced a sizeable central display screen, a set of capacitive touch switches, and a host of features that can be accessed from the steering wheel itself.

Safety hasn’t been shown the back seat in the 2015 Legacy and that’s evident straight off the bat. In addition to eight airbags (standard equipment), the Japanese sedan welcomes an adaptive cruise control system, blind spot monitoring, electronic brake force distribution, and lane keeping assist as well.

What’s on offer?

On the performance front, the Legacy houses either a 2.5 litre 4-cylinder engine, or a 3.6 litre 6-cylinder under its hood. While the former whips out 175 horsepower at 5,800 RPM and 236 Nm of torque at 4,000 RPM, the latter churns out more impressive 256 horsepower at 6,000 RPM and 335 Nm of torque at 4,400 RPM. Sadly, both engines get mated to a Lineartronic CVT transmission, but there is some excitement to be found with a manual mode and paddle shifters.

Summing it…

From the previous generation model, the Legacy’s undoubtedly got a performance push, and as slight as it may be, the bigger issue resides in the absence of a GT variant. You could pop into the Mazda showroom and develop a fancy for the Mazda 6, or hop across the street and decide on the prosaic Toyota Camry, and those would be viable alternatives. If there had been a 2015 Legacy GT though, then that’d be a whole different story!
